Research |
To study fundamental forces of nature, especially weak interactions, to unravel the properties of such forces and to pin down their roles in the various natural phenomena. Topics under serious investigations include: (1) the physics of the early universe, (2) nuclei as a laboratory for studying weak interactions, (3) the role of weak interactions during the last stage of stellar evolution, in neutron stars or in quark stars, or during the early universe, and (4) cross-disciplinary subjects, such as non-equilibrium or nonlinear phenonema. During the four-year period of 2000 - 2003, serving as the overall principal investigator of the project in search of academic excellence on "Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics", a 15M US $ research initiative funded by the Ministry of Education. Also serving as the principal investigator of the subproject on "Theoretical Studies of Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics". The primary objective of my research has always been to spend twenty to thirty years helping to build up some distinct research traditions or disciplines that may help to elevate this place to one of the best around the world. In terms of teaching, it is hoped that the emphasis can be suitably divided into both professional training (to help train scientists of the next generation) and popular science teaching (to bring to light, for the general public, the role of science in the modern-day culture or civilization). Hopefully, the educated younger generations will help transform the world of the twenty-first century into the one of pride, peace, prosperity, and rich culture. |
